Cambridgeshire England. Forged iron, 6 5/8” length with wedge section sharply tapering blade designed for slashing and thrusting in hand to hand combat. Originally mounted with a wood, bone or antler grip and no guard, its size and light weight gave it an advantage over the heavier scramasax. Because of Vikings’ dependence on them, their weapons were imbued with spiritual significance. They were buried with their owners as part of the funerary process. Virtually every old town in Cambridgeshire has a recorded Viking history. Ely Abbey was destroyed in 870 by Danish raiders and Huntingdon was a staging place for Danish raids until 917, to mention two. Excavated and professionally conserved with Plexiglas display mount and Certificate of Authenticity.
