VIKING CHIEFTAIN’S PROTECTIVE BROOCH, 9TH CENTURY

Bronze, circular of, about 1 1/8” diameter with roped (?) edge. The cross pin perished. When fastened to the jerkin, these small metal brooches provided a measure of protection against sword cuts and, in fact, were a form of armor. Heavily encrusted from burial. Excavated in 1937 from the grave of a Viking chieftain in North Yorkshire.
