Bronze, 0.57” width, the cusped upper broken on a diagonal with the edge clearly showing deliberate bending before breaking. The heart stood for bravery, fortitude, loyalty, integrity, all attributes of the Viking warrior. It is abundantly referenced in Viking literature. Breaking metal possessions was part of the funerary ritual. Excavated in 1937 from the grave of a Viking chieftain in North Yorkshire.
