FINE VIKING SCRAMASAX, C.900-1000 AD

Iron, 9 3/4" total length with broad "whittle tang" and rounded shoulders indicating that it was mounted without a guard as is correct. Especially broad leaf shaped blade of wedge section with false edge. Relatively thin for its width as were Viking axes. In this case, distinguishing it from a work knife which would have more bulk for hacking. Also notable is the lack of edge loss from sharpening as would be found on a utility knife. This examples was made specifically for slashing and retains its original profile as well as much original surface to the blade. Exceptional for form and condition.
