VIKING SERPENT VOTIVE C.800-1000 AD
SKU:C8178
Iron, about 1” X 1 ¼”, formed as a snake with a scaly back entwined (perhaps dying) with the head broken off. Snake figures are prominent in Viking mythology, always with adverse representation. This beheaded one appears to be a retribution. Interestingly, it is executed in iron, a metal over which Vikings had unmatched mastery.
